James Millard Smith age 80 of Brick Landing passed away on Monday July 28, 2014 at the SECU Hospice House of Brunswick in Bolivia, NC.

He was born in Oakboro, North Carolina the son of the late, Sam Lee Smith and Margaret Honeycutt Smith.

Mr. Smith was a veteran of the United States Army. He loved to use his hands and loved the outdoors and will be greatly missed.

Surviving are his wife, Lou Hewett of the home; a step-son, Mike Hewett and wife Nancy of Shallotte; a step-daughter, Renee Stocks of Holden Beach; a brother, Wayne Smith of Brick Landing; four sisters, Magaline Riddle of Mint Hill, NC; Jolean Blackwell of Harrisburg, NC, Kay Rogers of Matthews, NC and Sylane Eudy of Charlotte, NC; three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held 6:00 PM Thursday July 31, 2014 at White Funeral & Cremation Service 3660 Express Drive Shallotte, NC by Reverend Bob Weathers officiating.

The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service at the Funeral Home.

Mildred Cherry Holden

Mildred Cherry Holden, a retired public school teacher, passed away on July 26, 2014, at the age of 89 years.  She lived most of her adult life in Holden Beach, North Carolina. Born April 25, 1925, in Gaston County, North Carolina, she was a daughter of the late William Otis and Ethel Abernathy Cherry. Mildred graduated from Belmont High School, Belmont, North Carolina.  She earned an Associate in Arts diploma from Mars Hill Junior College, a Bachelor of Science degree from Western Carolina University, a Master of Arts degree from George Peabody College at Vanderbilt, and she studied one summer at Radford College, Radford, Virginia.

Survivors include her husband, James Cecil Holden, Sr., and their children and spouses respectively:  Jim and K.C. (Chubb) Holden, Marston Holden, Majannah H. and Jeff Turlington, and Cecile Holden.  Surviving grandchildren are Jameson Holden, Ryan Holden, Daryl Turlington, and Trisha Turlington.  She is survived by one sister, Helen (Bunny) C. Allman and predeceased by her other sister, Mozelle C. Smith and their children.

The family will receive friends and relatives at Sabbath Home Baptist Church Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. followed immediately by the funeral service at 12:00 p.m. with Reverend Wade McLamb and Reverend Foyd Bennett officiating.  Graveside service will follow at the Holden Family Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Trisha Turlington, Daryl Turlington, Ryan Holden, Rendell Allman, David Allman, and Greg Holden.  Honorary pallbearers Jameson Holden, Tammy Parra, Vann Pyatte, Wayne Holden, Brenda Dempsey, Danny Galloway, David Lewis, and Grover Holden.

Mr. Charles Keith Smith 55 of Ash died July 25, 2014 at his home.

Keith was born in Brunswick County on May 25, 1959 and was the son of Charles E. “Billy” Smith and Nancy Clemmons Smith.

He is survived by his mother, Nancy Clemmons Smith of Ash; two children, Nicholas Smith of Ash, Malorie Smith of Shallotte; a sister, Kim Smith of Supply; grandchild, Caleb Leggett.

Mr. Joseph Wesley “JW” Smith age 66 of the Sunset Harbor Community died July 24, 2014.

JW was born in Columbus County on August 8, 1947 and was the son of the late Wesley and Mary Simmons Smith.

He is survived by his wife, Valeria Smith; three sons, Jeff Smith of Calabash, Mickey Smith of Calabash, Larry Whitley of Denver, NC; step-daughter, Nancy Fulford of Supply; three brothers, reverend Ronnie Smith of Supply, Reverend Steve Smith of High Point, Sam Smith of Ocean Isle Beach; a sister Brenda Horne of Calabash; 5 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.

A memorial service will be held Saturday July 26, 2014 at 1pm at The Love of Christ Ministries, Old Ocean Highway Bolivia officiated by his brother, Reverend Ronnie Smith.

Mr. John Charles Lennon, 62, of Bolivia died Monday July 14th 2014 at his home.

Mr. Lennon was born in Brunswick County April 22, 1952 and was the son of Clara Parker Lennon of Bolivia and the late Tolman Clarence Lennon. He was preceded in death by a brother, Tolman Lennon. He was an avid hunter and loved the outdoors.

Surviving in addition to his mother include his wife, Debbie T. Lennon; a son, Shawn Lennon; two sisters, June Clemmons and husband James and Nancy Moore and husband Raybon of Bolivia; sisters in-laws, Sandra Lennon of Marion, SC , Sue Inman and husband Thomas of Ash and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday July 16th, 2014 at 11:00 am at Supply Baptist Church with Reverend Bill McNeill officiating.

Burial will follow in the Lennon Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be, Thomas Inman, Brian Inman, Jeffery Inman, James Clemmons, Jeremy Clemmons, Jason Clemmons.

Mrs. Thelma Robards Shannon, of Shallotte and formally of Charlotte passed away at Universal Health Care in Bolivia, N.C. on July 10, 2014.

She is survived by her husband Benjamin Eugene Shannon of 67 years.  Two daughters, Elizabeth S. Spoon and husband Steve of Shallotte, N.C. and Cynthia S. Presson and husband Ed of Niceville, Fl., four grandsons, Chad Spoon, Eric Spoon, Scott Presson and David Presson.  Two great-grandsons, Hunter Presson and Tucker Presson.  One great-granddaughter, Lexi Spoon.

She was born on March 12, 1923 in Cameron, N.C., the daughter of Samuel William Robards and Della Mae Robards.

She grew up at Barium Springs Orphanage and attended Bryce Commercial College in High Point, N.C.  She worked at Bank of America in High Point and Charlotte for 16 ½ years until she retired in 1985.

She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, N.C., taught Sunday School and was an active member of their Chapel Bible Class for years.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday, July 15, 2014 at 2:00p.m. at Sharon Memorial Park with Reverend John Causey, pastor of Shallotte Presbyterian Church officiating .Interment will be at Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte, N.C.

Memorials may be made to Barium Springs Orphanage in Barium Springs, N.C. or to Shallotte Presbyterian Church in Shallotte, N.C.

Mrs. Novie Marie Galloway, 85, of Supply died Monday July 7th 2014 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Galloway was born in Brunswick County on October 20, 1928 and was the daughter of the late Lewis and Melissa Ellen Hewett Robinson. She was wife of the late Reverend Harry Galloway and was also preceded in death by her siblings, Vance Robinson, John B. Robinson, Taft Robinson, Elroy Robinson, Zettie Simmons, Vuena Lancaster, Leatha Caison, Odelia Long, Curtie Thompson, Lillie Galloway. She was a member of Union Chapel Independent Pentecostal Church.

She is survived by her children, Ardys Robinson and husband Roger, Ada McDonald and husband Doug, Lori Varnum and husband Tony, Leisha Ivey and husband Robert, Chaunda Norris and husband Greg all of Supply; grandchildren, Tonya Robbins and husband Arthur, Trevor McDonald and wife Ava, Tara Cameron and husband Marc, Jarad Ivey and wife Lindi, Diana Fulford and husband Bryan, Joshua Varnum and wife Kierstyn and Jabin Norris; great grandchildren, Austin Robbins, Nadia Robbins, Leah McDonald, Candice Caison, Jonathan Ivey, Ethan Cameron, Erin Cameron, Sarah Ivey and a great great grandchild, Drake Milligan; a sister, Arlene Norris of Supply.

Funeral services will be held Friday July 11th , 2014 at 1pm at Union Chapel Independent Pentecostal Church with Reverend Gerald Kirby, Reverend Mike Jacobs and reverend Greg Norris Officiating. Burial will follow in the Georgetown-Holden Cemetery.

Darlene Kay Adams, age 51, of Supply passed away on Sunday, July 6, 2014.

Mrs Adams was born November 10, 1962 in Davidson County, daughter of Gary and Tamra Phelps. She was a school teacher and member of Brunswick Islands Baptist Church.

Survivors include parents Gary and Tamra Phelps of Mocksville, N.C., husband, Joseph of the home, son Jeremy of the home and daughter Nichole Kimrey of Advance, N.C., and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on July 19, 2014 at 2:00 p.m.at the Brunswick Islands Baptist Church with Reverend Rudy Ramphal officiating.

Lloyd Herbert “Poor Boy” Nealey, age 80, of Shallotte passed away on Saturday, June 28, 2014 at SECU Hospice House of Brunswick in Bolivia.

Mr. Nealey was born May 7, 1934, son of the late McKinzey and Frances Nealey. He was retired from Cascade Die Casting of High Point after 32 years of service. He also was owner of Lloyd”s Trucking.

Survivors include his wife Linda of the home, sister, Rose Jacobs of Tabor City, daughters, Brenda Friedmann and husband Jeff of Thomasville, Linda Garrison and husband Bobby of Thomasville, stepdaughters, Donna Torrence and husband Michael of Salisbury, Mandy Woods and fiancé Gordy of Thomasville, Wendy Woods of Kannapolis, and Fur Babies Sammy & Nikki, grandchildren, Alischa Hall, Crystal Shoaf, Roby Clodfelter, Stepgrandchildren, Cassandra Parrish, Adam Parrish, Savannah Slawter, Gavin Stawter, great grandchildren, Pamela Campbell, Amber Williamson, Cheyenne Justice and Dylan Swaney.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 am Tuesday, July 1st, 2014 at Shell Point Baptist Church with Reverend Larry Milliken officiating. Burial will follow at the Forrest Lawn Cemetery, Tabor City at 1:30 p.m. with dedication of the grave by Elder Pete Duncan.

Mr. Sam B. Somersett, age 76 of Ocean Isle Beach, N.C. died Wednesday June 25, 2014 at the Kindred Hospital in Greensboro, N.C.

He was born in Brunswick County on September 24, 1937 and was the son of the late H.I. and Mary Viola Frink Somersett. He was the owner and operator of Somersett Hardware in Sunset Beach prior to his retirement.

He is survived by his wife Marie H. Somersett of the home, daughter Sandra Todd and husband Jerry of Ocean Isle Beach, grandchildren Victoria and Nicholas Todd of Ocean Isle Beach, and a sister, Mary Tharpe of Winnabow.

Graveside services will be held on Friday June 27th, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Mintz cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the cemetery and other times from the home.
