Georgia Kay Cox-McKee age 57 of Shallotte, NC passed away on Tuesday August 26, 2014 at home surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on April 6, 1957 in Washington, DC the daughter of the late James Edgar Cox and Mary Elizabeth Carteret Davis and husband, Gary of Supply.

Surviving in addition her mother are two brothers, Dale Carteret and wife, Diana of Fayetteville, NC and Terry Cox of New Bern, NC; three sisters Gail Jackson of Shallotte, Gay Ferris and husband, Ferris also of Shallotte, NC and Cherie Huggins and husband, Darryl of Summerville, SC; five nieces and three nephews; several great-nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday August 30, 2014 at the New Covenant Church Mt. Pisgah Road Supply, NC by Reverend Tom Bias officiating.

Reverend Dewey F. Belton Jr. age 86 of Nesmith, SC formerly of Supply passed away on Sunday August 24, 2014 in Conway, SC.

He was born in Surry County, NC on May 14, 1928 son of the late Dewey F. Belton, Sr. and Ella Corn Belton.

Reverend Belton was a retired Baptist Minister.

Surviving are his wife, Oddie Mae Belton of the home; two sons, Randy Belton of Graham, NC and Rev. Steward Belton of Columbia, SC; three daughters, Brenda Hare of Holden Beach, NC, Mickey Sprinkle and Tina Belton both of Winston Salem, NC; two sisters, Peggy Flemning and Bonnie Thornton both of Mt. Airy, NC; eleven grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held at 12:00 Noon on Thursday August 28, 2014 at Sabbath Home Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service at the church.

bradley mBradley Ray Milliken age 44 of Ocean Isle Beach died Saturday August 23, 2014.
Bradley was born in Columbus County on January 12, 1970 and was the son of Lloyd E. Milliken Sr. and Geraldine Gore Milliken. He was preceded in death by his father, Lloyd E. Milliken Sr. and a brother, Keith O’Brian Milliken.
He is survived by his mother, Geraldine Gore Milliken; three children, Joshua Daniel Milliken, Danielle Nicole Milliken, Elijah Keith Milliken; a sister, Renee Milliken Pope; a brother, Lloyd Earl Milliken Jr.; nieces and nephews, Nicholas Ryan Milliken, Melissa Rae Milliken, Somer Rose Milliken.
A memorial service will be held Thursday August 28th 2014 at 3pm at Jennies Branch Baptist Church with Pastor Robbie Stephens officiating. Inurnment will follow in the church cemetery.

Mr. John F. Lewis

Mr. John F. Lewis

Mr. John F. Lewis age 77 of Carolina Shores died Friday August 8, 2014 at SECU Hospice House of Brunswick with his wife and family by his side.

Mr. Lewis was born on July 9, 1937 and was the son of the late John G. and Martha Connelly Lewis. He was also preceded in death by a nephew, David Lewis and a step-son, Robert Leibowitz. John was a proud seventh generation of Cape Cod. He graduated from Barnstable High School in Hyannis, Ma. in 1955 where he excelled in sports. Following High School he served a four year term in the United States Navy. He attended Stone Hill College, USC, Santa Barbara and North Eastern University earning his Bachelors Degree. He was an avid golfer and fisherman. He was a communicant at St. Brendan’s Catholic Church.

He was a loving and devoted husband to his wife, P.J. Lewis. He is also survived by four daughters, Kerry Jean Aponas of Amesbury, Ma., Kathleen Thomas of Cheraw, SC, Karen Hammer of Cheraw, SC, Sarah McCullough of Boca Raton, Fl.; a brother, David Lewis of Osterville, Ma.; two sisters, Shirley Rogers of Naples, Fl., Bonnie Withington of Osterville, Ma.; 10 grandchildren, 1 nephew and 6 nieces.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday August 22, 2014 at 10am at St. Brendan’s Catholic Church.

The family will receive friends on Thursday August 21, 2014 from 7-9 pm at White Funeral and Cremation Service, 3660 Express Dr., Shallotte.

William “Bill” Denson, 85, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, July 26, 2014.

He will be greatly missed as he was loved by his family and many friends. Bill was a member of the Holden Beach VFW and a member of the Moose Lodge for many years. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Laura and Frederick Denson and three brothers, Harold, Leonard, and Frederick.

He is survived by his wife of fifty years, Betty Denson; daughter, Jean Clark and son in law Bill; son, Jim White and daughter in law Felicia; grandchildren, Jonathan and Christopher Clark, Tiffany and Bill Hager, Kim and Dennis Diage, and John Northrup; five great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Aileen Spencer, and Pat and Bob Seeley; and brother in law Robert and Betty Canova and many nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, August 2, 2014 at Gospel Center Baptist Church in Varnamtown.

Olenda Robinson Thompkins departed this life to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, August 3, 2014 at the age of 90 with family by her side.

She was born in Brunswick County on March 6, 1924, delivered by Dr. William Goley at the family home in Boone’s Neck. She was the youngest of the eleven children of Jesse Drew Robinson and Martha Elizabeth Arnold Robinson.

Mrs. Thompkins graduated from Shallotte High School in 1942 and married her childhood sweetheart, George Vinible Thompkins, that same year. They were married just a few months shy of 50 years when he passed away in 1992.

Mrs. Thompkins was a gifted gardener and a talented seamstress. She also enjoyed traveling and had the opportunity to visit Iran, Australia, parts of Europe, and all of North America. She taught kindergarten for over fifteen years at Village Presbyterian Church in Fayetteville and was a hospital volunteer for many years in Albemarle. She was a member of Sharon United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Thompkins was preceded in death by her parents and husband as well as her three bothers Jesse Cromwell Robinson, Stetson Herbert Robinson, and Willie Boyd Robinson; and her seven sisters Mary Elizabeth Greenley, Bessie Lee Caison, Delma Varnam, Ona Shytle, Beatrice Chadwick, Vara Sermons, and Irene Milligan.

She is survived by her daughters Brenda Clouse of the home and Barbara Gruene of Kingman Arizona; grandchildren Andrea Lomascola of Fresno, California, Suzy Velasco and her husband John of Southport, and David Faller and his wife Renée of Vucca Valley, California; great-grandchildren Cherie Cosentino, Jennifer Lomascola, Jacob Powell, Stuart Velasco, Sarah Velasco, Carson Faller, and Selah Faller; two brothers-in-law and five sisters-in-law, as well as many dearly loved nieces, nephews, and friends. She will be deeply missed.

The family would like to thank the kind and compassionate staff of Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Life Care Center for the support and care that they provided.

A celebration of Mrs. Thompkins’ life will be held at Sharon United Methodist Church on Saturday, August 9, 2014 at 11 o’clock. Family time will be one hour prior to the service. Reverend Eddie Hill will officiate.

Wendell Scott Davis 43 of Supply died Monday July 28, 2014.

Mr. Davis was born in New Hanover County on September 23, 1970 and was the son of Wendell and Diane Varnam Davis. He was preceded in death by his father, Wendell Davis and a brother, Ryan Davis.

He is survived by his mother, Diane V. Davis; two daughters, Allison Blair Davis and Alexis Diane Davis of Supply; maternal grandparents, Reverend Weston and Mary Varnam of Supply; his fiance’, Wendy Gray of Charlotte.

Funeral services will be held Friday August 1, 2014 at 3pm at Gospel Center Baptist Church with Reverend Foyd Bennett officiating. Burial will follow in the Gospel Center Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the funeral service.

James Millard Smith age 80 of Brick Landing passed away on Monday July 28, 2014 at the SECU Hospice House of Brunswick in Bolivia, NC.

He was born in Oakboro, North Carolina the son of the late, Sam Lee Smith and Margaret Honeycutt Smith.

Mr. Smith was a veteran of the United States Army. He loved to use his hands and loved the outdoors and will be greatly missed.

Surviving are his wife, Lou Hewett of the home; a step-son, Mike Hewett and wife Nancy of Shallotte; a step-daughter, Renee Stocks of Holden Beach; a brother, Wayne Smith of Brick Landing; four sisters, Magaline Riddle of Mint Hill, NC; Jolean Blackwell of Harrisburg, NC, Kay Rogers of Matthews, NC and Sylane Eudy of Charlotte, NC; three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held 6:00 PM Thursday July 31, 2014 at White Funeral & Cremation Service 3660 Express Drive Shallotte, NC by Reverend Bob Weathers officiating.

Mildred Cherry Holden

Mildred Cherry Holden, a retired public school teacher, passed away on July 26, 2014, at the age of 89 years.  She lived most of her adult life in Holden Beach, North Carolina. Born April 25, 1925, in Gaston County, North Carolina, she was a daughter of the late William Otis and Ethel Abernathy Cherry. Mildred graduated from Belmont High School, Belmont, North Carolina.  She earned an Associate in Arts diploma from Mars Hill Junior College, a Bachelor of Science degree from Western Carolina University, a Master of Arts degree from George Peabody College at Vanderbilt, and she studied one summer at Radford College, Radford, Virginia.

Survivors include her husband, James Cecil Holden, Sr., and their children and spouses respectively:  Jim and K.C. (Chubb) Holden, Marston Holden, Majannah H. and Jeff Turlington, and Cecile Holden.  Surviving grandchildren are Jameson Holden, Ryan Holden, Daryl Turlington, and Trisha Turlington.  She is survived by one sister, Helen (Bunny) C. Allman and predeceased by her other sister, Mozelle C. Smith and their children.

The family will receive friends and relatives at Sabbath Home Baptist Church Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. followed immediately by the funeral service at 12:00 p.m. with Reverend Wade McLamb and Reverend Foyd Bennett officiating.  Graveside service will follow at the Holden Family Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Trisha Turlington, Daryl Turlington, Ryan Holden, Rendell Allman, David Allman, and Greg Holden.  Honorary pallbearers Jameson Holden, Tammy Parra, Vann Pyatte, Wayne Holden, Brenda Dempsey, Danny Galloway, David Lewis, and Grover Holden.

Mr. Charles Keith Smith 55 of Ash died July 25, 2014 at his home.

Keith was born in Brunswick County on May 25, 1959 and was the son of Charles E. “Billy” Smith and Nancy Clemmons Smith.

He is survived by his mother, Nancy Clemmons Smith of Ash; two children, Nicholas Smith of Ash, Malorie Smith of Shallotte; a sister, Kim Smith of Supply; grandchild, Caleb Leggett.
